What a Sham!

The days are getting shorter and for some of us, it's more difficult to awaken when it's still dark out.  Today's feature are shams from my collection.  There are many redwork shams in the antique world.  Here are some of my favorites:

I bought these locally and wanted them because they had been submitted to our local Allentown Fair.

These shams won 2nd place in the "Assorted Pillow Shams" category.

This white work sham came from the same estate:

This sham features a line from the poem, Hiawatha.  I've always wondered the second sham looked like.

The above sham was made by a 6 year old child!
Hattie E. Mory also embroidered the squares of a large redwork quilt and her doll quilt is part of the collection at Colonial Williamsburg here.

Speaking of kids, tomorrow I will feature shams and pillowcases made for kids!

Have a safe and happy day!

  1. My redwork/outline embroidery collection began with pillow shams, too. The concept of a lay-over-the-pillow textile was completely new to me.https://withstringsattached.blogspot.com/2020/01/a-new-home-for-redwork.html
