Happy Monday!
We are experiencing another heatwave. Are you? It's just as well. My back garden is full of weeds but I'm not going out there right now. The catbirds have fledglings out back. Lucky almost got one of the baby birds. 😟 Obviously Mama Catbird is very upset whenever we are out there.
So it's back to the sewing room. I'm working on making blocks for my guild challenge quilt. The challenge this year is "Quilts in Movies/Literature." The quilt can be inspired by a movie or a book or a copy of one seen or described in those genres.
Guild challenge quilts are a recent phenomenon. I couldn't find any source that indicated they appeared before the late 1980s.
There were other ways quilters competed in the earlier part of the century, mainly with quilt contests. Some of these were local and after WW 2 ended, it seemed like a lot of these were associated with local or state fairs. A few were sponsored by local businesses.
My favorite of the business promotions was White's Furniture Store in Pensacola, Florida. The store was promoting early American furniture and sponsored the contest in 1957. Look how cleverly they incorporated their furniture in this feature piece about the winners!
Have you participated in a quilt challenge (besides my suffrage one of 2020)? What was your favorite challenge if you did?
Have a wonderful day!
Love that page from the magazine, the dresses and heels always tickle me. Mom dressed that way most of the time, without the heels in the house of course. ;)
